There are lots of brands and styles of golfing equipment that you are able to use, but it can be puzzling as to what you actually need to play a great game of golf. Lets have a look at some of the equipment that most golfers consider necessary.

Naturally, your most crucial pieces of equipment are your clubs. You will want to take care to select clubs that are suitable to your style of golf.
They should be comfortable to handle and designed toward your height. Novices and experts alike should lean towards the light graphite shafts and titanium heads in order that you have highest forgiveness in the outcome of a bad shot.

You should ideally have a full set of clubs. That means you will need a driver, a 3 wood, a 5 wood, a full set of irons (from 3 to 9), a sand wedge, and a putter. That is the minimum. You can also add other clubs to your armory as you become more skilled at the game. You will also be able to include a 1 iron for fairway shots also as a wedge for getting out of the rough.

The golf ball in truth can be an all important piece of golfing equipment. Depending upon what you are looking for, you can find balls that will improve your distance, your spin, or your performance. Search balls that are a bit softer.

If you have never given any thoughts to your golf tees as part of your golf equipment, now is the time to start. There are actually numerous types of tees that you can choose from each with their own advantages. There are long tees when you need to have the ball teed up high, short tees for those tee box iron shots, and even three-pronged tees for stability. In point of fact, the three-pronged tee was the first type of golf tee that was used in the early years of golf.

If you like the thought of carrying your clubs around in one bunch, I guess you can just carry on,all the same, a golf bag sure makes carrying your clubs around much more comfortable. Plus, with a good golf bag, you will be able to carry your tees, your balls, snacks, your cell phone, and anything else you think is essential.

As the golf swing requires a certain amount of stability, you should also add some golf shoes to your golfing equipment list. Golf shoes have cleats on the bottom that allow you to maintain your footing while swinging. This can be so really important whilst moving your body to strike the ball. Golf shoes help you stay well-balanced and keep your feet grounded.

There are definitely more forms of golfing equipment that you will be able to buy and use when playing a game of golf. Just don't go overboard and focus on the basic principle to begin with. And then when you get more adept, you will be able to add all of the cutting-edge gadgets to your bag.

The Spin On Center of Gravity

If you've been reading my golf tips newsletter, scanning golf Web sites, or perusing golf magazines, you've probably come across the term center of gravity (COG). More than likely, you've seen the term in conjunction with ads for or an article about golf clubs. That's because it's one of the hottest concepts in golf club manufacturing technology, along with moment of inertia (MOI). And like many recreational golfers, you probably wondering what COG is and how it affects your game.
Actually, the concept isn't new. It's been around for years. What's new is its execution. Thanks to advances in golf club manufacturing technology and golf club research and design, center of gravity is a concept whose time has come. And while it's not a term you'll hear a lot about during a golf lesson, it's a term you should know because it can have a decided impact on your golf handicap.

COG Defined One golf Web site defined center of gravity as "the point within the head of a golf club at which it would be perfectly balanced." That's as good a definition of COG as any I've read. Technically, COG is determined by balancing the clubhead on its face, sole, or any place on the head - the intersection inside of the head of all these different balance points is the center of gravity of the clubhead.

Since the center of gravity is a single point inside the clubhead, its location has to be defined in 3-dimensions. There's a vertical COG location (how high up in the head the COG is from the sole), a horizontal COG location (how far over it is from the center of the shaft in the hosel of the head), and a depth COG location (how far back from the face it is located). If you alter the position of any of these points, you alter both the COG and the club's performance.

Position of COG The position of the center of gravity within a clubhead alters both the trajectory and the accuracy of shots. A COG position that's low and toward the back of a clubhead encourages a higher trajectory for any given loft angel on the club. On the other hand, the closer the COG is to the shaft, the less a golfer tends to hit a ball offline. The farther the center of gravity is from the shaft, the more a golfer tends to hit the ball offline.

In theory you would always want the COG in line with the center of the clubhead's face. But moving the COG helps "mitigate" some swing flaws. That's great for those of us who don't hit the ball in the face's center, which judging from my golf lessons and my experience in general, is the category where most recreational golfers fall. The more the designer incorporates perimeter weighting in the clubhead's design, then, the better off a recreational golfer is with the club.

COG also alters ball flight, which is good for players with some ability. Moving the COG toward the heel helps you hit a hook. When contact occurs away from the center of gravity, the ball's axis of rotation tilts toward the heel. That imparts sidespin, causing the ball to move. However, as moment of inertia (MOI)--the relative stability of off-center hits--increases, the more you have to move the COG to produce the sidespin you need to hook the shot.

Impact of COG What does all this mean for a golfer and his/her golf handicap? When you're buying golf clubs, research the COG of the clubs your considering. Since you're not a professional, look for a club offering the best center of gravity for your caliber of play. Cavity-back irons, for example, where the COG has been moved more toward the club's outer edges are great for beginners because they're more forgiving of off-center hits, which means the new golfer find the fairway a lot more than with clubs lacking perimeter weight design.

However, be careful when considering clubhead design. Manufacturers often add or subtract design features in an attempt to make their clubs perform better and differentiate them from other clubs. Some "improvements" impact COG, which means they will affect the clubs performance, too. What you need to do is find the clubhead that works for you, test the club if you can. Testing is the best way of determining if a club is right for you.

Now that you know what center of gravity is, take advantage of it the next time you're in the market for new clubs. COG will impact a club's performance, including trajectory and accuracy. That in turn impacts your golf handicap. For best results, look for a club with a center of gravity that fits your game.

Tennis Mental Game: Easy Tips to Win Big Games

When you are preparing for a big tennis match, it can be quite tought to stay focused and keep your head straight. There are many things that you want to remember, because each element can be the key difference in the outcome of your match. We all know that tennis is a very physical game, but it is even more a mental game. By learning tennis mind techniques and tips that will give you the advantage, you will always have the control during the big matches.
How to control your nerves

You always want to remember that although you may be nervous, your opponent may be just as nervous as you are, if not even more nervous than you. This is especially true if your opponent is ranked higher than you are. He is expected to win and is thrust into the spotlight in this way. So, he has everything to lose, and you have everything to gain. By being aware of this simple mind shift, you can become less nervous and hopefully your opponent's nerves will go haywire.

Remember that your opponent is struggling just as you are. He even might be worried about more things than you are. You never know when they might be dealing with a nagging injury, or having an off day or whatever else he might be dealing with. Remember that it's not all on you.

Start Off Easy

When you're playing in a large and important match, many players make the mistake of starting off by playing with super shots and big plays. However, what happens most of the time is that this might cause you to over play and make mistakes that could cost you the game. By simply starting out slowly and playing normally, you'll become more relaxed. This will allow you to take advantage of situations where you can get the upper hand. Don't come out trying to make outstanding shots - simply play efficiently and keep your head cool and you will have the upper hand in big matches.

Don't Be Intimidated

When you're playing in a big match, remember that you're simply playing with a ball on your side of the court. You're not playing your opponent's reputation, family, or anything like that. You're working with the ball on your side of the court and nothing else. This is a great way to stay focused so that you can deal with any sort of situation in the game and also so that you can take advantage of your opponent's weaknesses.

Another thing that will help you to keep from being intimidated is to stay competitive. Take advantage of all the opportunities when they arise and use them to tip the game in your favor. This is something that the world-class players always stay ready for. By utilizing these tips and ideas you will stay ahead of the game.

Hitting the Slopes

With the increase in adaptive ski programs throughout the country and the advances in equipment, adaptive skiing is fast becoming one of the most popular sports. Adaptive skiing provides people with disabilities the opportunity to ski using specialty equipment (sit-skis, outriggers, etc.). It is a sport that is truly universal for those with disabilities.

As more and more people with disabilities get involved with the sport, there are several key thoughts to be considered before hitting the slopes, according to Disaboom.com, the largest online community/support network for people with disabilities, the first consideration is equipment.
Understand the types of skis and which ones are best suited for you. Then, it's time for fashion with function. Gear up with clothing and apparel that are both warm and look good on the slopes--Finally, find a trusted source to teach you how to get going.

Types of Adaptations for people with disabilities

Mono ski--The skier sits in a molded bucket-style seat that is mounted to a frame attached to a single ski. A shock absorber between the bucket and the ski cushions your ride. Since good upper-body strength and balance are needed, good candidates for the mono ski are typically lower extremity double amputee, spina bifida, spinal cord injury levels T6 and below (although exceptions occur).

Bi Ski--The skier sits in a rigid shell that is attached on top of two wide specialty skis. The two skis allow for a wider base ensuring more stability for the skier. The bi ski does not have a suspension system. Good candidates for the bi ski include beginner skiers, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and higher-level spinal cord injury.

Dual ski--The dual ski is a system designed to bridge the gap between the mono ski and bi ski. It sits like the mono ski, but it is attached to two skis. Those who have advanced past the bi ski but are not yet ready for the mono ski are most appropriate for the dual ski.

3-Track--These skiers require one regular ski and two hand-held outriggers, hence the three points of contact to the snow. Good candidates would be amputees, post polio, hemiplegic, those who ambulate with or without assistive device, do not have full use of one leg, but have one strong non-impaired leg.

How to Get Started

When looking for a good adaptive snow ski program, the National Sports Center for the Disabled offers this advice:

* Ski instructors should be PSIA certified (Professional Ski Instructor of America)

* Instructor conducts a personal evaluation of your goals and specific needs

* Ask what is included in the lesson (rentals, lift ticket, etc.)

* Find out about accessible buildings and how to get to and from the slopes

After you are paired with your qualified instructor and volunteers and you have discussed your goals and needs, you will be fitted for your ski. Then, your training begins. They will most likely take you to a flat area to practice methods for balancing and using outriggers. You will most likely fall during this process, but it is a good opportunity to learn how to get back up. In the lesson you will learn techniques for controlling speed and chairlift procedures. The instructors hold a tether attached to the ski to help control speed and turns. Getting on and off the chair lift frightens even non-disabled beginners; however, there are several factors that make this process easier. Some skiers are strong enough to push up on the chair using their outriggers, but in time that can wear your shoulders out. Majority of people will need some assistance loading on/off the lift. Your instructor and volunteer will lift you safely onto the chairlift until you are able to safely do it yourself. Mono skis and other custom skis come equipped with a hydraulic or mechanical system that raises the bucket seat high enough to clear the lift. Once you are safely on the lift, sit all the way back in the chair and enjoy the views.

Disability should not interfere with the exhilaration and experience of alpine skiing. First, you have to believe in yourself. The right attitude is very powerful in the road to recovery. Disaboom.com is helping to dismantle negative stereotypes and empower people with disabilities.

Adaptive Alpine Skiing, Go With a Pro

No matter what the disability, anybody can enjoy going downhill skiing thanks to quality instruction and equipment, according to Disaboom.com, the largest online community for people with disabilities. If you are going to invest your time and money at a local or not-so-local ski resort, start with a Professional Adaptive Ski Instructor. I have been instructing Snow sports since 1996 at Disabled Sports USA programs www.dsusa.org, and the most valuable advice I can give you is to choose a resort that puts a lot of effort into training their instructors to be professional while also offering a wide variety of adaptive equipment.
In adaptive skiing, there are six different disciplines: developmental, visually impaired, mono-ski, bi-ski, 3-track and 4-track. Following is information about choosing a qualified instructor as well as selecting the right resort. You can also find this information by visiting Disaboom.com, selecting the living section and continue on to sports & recreation. So don't sit inside on those cold winter days; get out and play.

Instructors

Adaptive Snow sports instructors can earn three different levels of certification; before scheduling your lesson, check to see if your instructor is qualified to teach at your level. An Instructor qualified at Level 1 has performed to national standards in at least one of the six disciplines to the beginning level. Adaptive Level 2 instructors have performed to national standard in all six disciplines to the intermediate level. Adaptive Level 3 instructors have performed to national standard in all six disciplines to the expert level.

Choosing a Resort

When choosing a resort, the number one question to ask is how many instructors at the program have adaptive certifications. If they have a high percentage of certified instructors, you can expect that those certified instructors are training the new guys and gals how to be professional as well. You will often have a great experience at this resort, even if your instructor is new that season. However, if the percentage of certified adaptive instructors is very low or non-existent, you may have a substandard experience. It is up to you to do the research and remember you are in control of the lesson. When you pay to have a great experience and you feel it was inadequate, you may want to request a level 2 or 3 instructor during your next visit just to get you going in a positive direction.

No matter what your disability is, if you have ever wanted to try adaptive skiing, or if you want to improve your skiing skills, you can. Last week the big upset was the defeat of AC Milan to Atalanta, followed by the pressing of Parma to Inter. First team to really test Inter and almost make them taste their first defeat of the Season. What will happen in Week 20 of the Serie A?

Here is my preview:
Saturday, January 26, 2008 Twentieth Round Serie A - Matchday 20

Sampdoria - AC Siena Serie A Standing: Sampdoria 7th position, 25 points AC Siena 17th position, 17 points

You bet Sampdoria is all "energized" after getting a draw with Juventus in the Olimpico. However, there might be a surprise here with SIENA who beat Palermo last week. So, both teams are motivated to grasp those 3 points. A defeat for Siena will mean going back to the "relegation zone."

I am sure Siena Coach Mario Berretta is preparing this match with a magnifying glass. Problem is that Sampdoria is not ready to lose at home. So, who will win?

I think Berretta should let the dynamic duo forwards Fernado Forestieri and Massimo Maccarone in the starting line up instead of using forward Christian Rigano who just signed for Siena. I don't think it is wise to test Rigano in this match. Sure, he might be a substitute. Maccarone is the man to watch here.

Problem for Siena will be not having midfielder Paolo De Ceglie who injured during the Palermo match. Probably defender Andrea Rossi will get his place. Good news is that midfielderDaniele Galloppa can play again after his one match ban. A familiar face for Sampdoria is forward Enrico Chiesa, but I doubt Berretta will include him in the main line up. Siena needs young forwards and compared to the energetic Maccarone, Chiesa might be only among the substitutes.

If Sampdoria loses this match, it will be terrible as they might go down to the 10th position. Advantage is that they will be playing at home. Disadvantages include not having enough fit forwards because Vincenzo Montella is out and Antonio Cassano might not be completely fit. Coach Walter Mazzarri must rely on Claudio Bellucci and Emiliano Bonazzoli, question is whether these two forwards can take the lead. Other problem for Sampdoria is the suspension of defender Hugo Campagnaro, plus Paolo Sammarco is injured. A Tough match here.

My position: AC SIENA

AS Roma - Palermo Serie A Standing: AS Roma 2nd position, 42 points Palermo 9th position, 25 points

It will be almost impossible that ROMA lose this match. Why? Simply, there are only 7 points difference between Roma and Inter. Practically, the main two contenders for the Scudetto are Roma and Inter. So, do you think Roma will let these 3 points go away? No. I don't think so.

Sadly for Palermo who are in bad shape after 3 defeats in 2008, worst losing their last match at home against Siena. Palermo need to "believe, recover their motivation." Though, just remembering their big 4-0 defeat in Roma last season might not be motivating.

Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti might count with Captain Francesco Totti again. Plus, defender Christian Panucci is back. He can also motivate the team in the pitch. I don't think forward Mirko Vucinic should be in the starting line up, he was not sharp on Wednesday's match against Catania.

Good news for Roma also include the return of midfielder Simone Perrotta. So, there is no way that Roma can lose. Problem for Spalletti will be to choose among so many top players, like Ludovic Giuly over Perrotta? Perrotta and Totti are sure to be the driving force for Roma. Well, I hope both have the chance because Giuly has been brilliant even scoring!.

Only possible problem for Roma in the midfield is the suspension of Daniele De Rossi after being booked.

Palermo is the one to be concerned here. How will Palermo Coach Francesco Guidolin prepare his defense? Will Fabio Simplicio be replaced by Cavani? Here is the chance for forward Amauri to shine and make a miracle: Winning in the Olimpico! If Miccoli is motivated and fit he can be a real danger for Milan's defense. Here is where Roma headmaster's Christian Panucci and Philippe Mexes must shine to block Miccoli.

My position: AS ROMA

Atalanta - Reggina Serie A Standing: Atalanta 6th position, 25 points Reggina 18th position, 17 points

Talking about having the right motivation to start this match, Alatanta is energized after beating AC MILAN Wednesday for the replay of the Twelfth Round. Problem is for Reggina that has not been able to win away. Can they beat Atalanta? I don't think so. However, if Reggina loses this match, they might remain in the relegation zone longer.

If we based our preview on statistics, then, we can say it will be a 1 - 1 draw. Atalanta and Reggina last three matches ended 1-1. Though, this time, I think Atalanta will win this match.

Problem for Atalanta Coach Gigi del Neri might be the long list of injured players: defender Leonardo Talamonti, midfielder Costinha, forward Marino Defendi and even goalkeeper George Forsyth! Hopefully, forward Antonio Langella will be fit because he had some pain in his heel.

Problems for Reggina Coach Ulivieri include the suspension of Francesco Cozza.Plus, forward Nicola Amoruso, defender Angelo Garcia, and Joelson will also be out. To make matters worst for Coach Ulivieri, Luca Vigiani might not be fit either. Only hope is Brienza.

My position: ATALANTA

AC MILAN - GENOA Serie A Standing: AC Milan 10th position, 24 points Genoa 8th position, 25 points

After Wednesday's defeat against Atalanta for the replay of the 12th Round, Milan see their hope to reach the third position disappearing in the horizon. Technically, Milan is a stronger team than Genoa. Milan also beat Genoa 3 -0 in the first round on August 27, 2007. However, it seems every team of the Serie A might beat the "SO CALLED BEST WORLD CLUB.," It is an unbelievable case, Milan the almighty in the international arena, it just becomes a "mouse going around and around" escaping from the cat in the Serie A.

I think Milan Coach Ancelotti should start with the Brazilian trio KA PA RO, and not like he did with Atalanta when used Gilardino instead of Ronaldo in the starting lineup. Hopefully, PATO can shine this time and make the connection with Kaka. I hope he is not feeling the pressure to score because that will only block him.

Problem for Milan might be "an ex-milan player, forward Marco Borriello." Borriello has become GENOA's main man. Ironically, he might catapult MILAN's dream this Sunday to win at home. Will San Siro cry or will rejoice? I think Milan players should eat their SPINACH to become stronger like POPEYE or they will cry in San Siro.

The other problem for Ancelotti is that midfielder Clarence Seedorf might ruin the harmony in the field when playing as a "trequartista," which is KAKA's position. Here was one of the main problems during the match with Atalanta.

Luckily for Milan, midfielder Andrea Pirlo is coming back from suspension and might put some order in the field. It was clear that Pirlo's vision, ability to read the match is instrumental for Ancelotti. Apparently, goalkeeper DIDA cannot recover yet, so, the chance will be again for Australian goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac. Moreover, defender Paolo Maldini still has the flu. So, Ancelotti must rely on Alessandro Nesta and Kaladze. Kaladze must concentrate this time and avoid making unnecessary mistakes.

Genoa has the "emotional advantage" to know that Milan struggle to win in San Siro. Problem is that neither Domenico Criscito nor Julio Cesar Leon will play because of a ban. Question for Genoa will be whether they will use Argentinian Lucio Figueroa. Genoa might also let former Fiorentina player midfieleder Anthony Vanden Borre to make his debut in San Siro.

Hey, Vanden Borre and Borriello might be Milan's headache. Will Milan finally come to senses and play like champions in the Serie A? Just in case, have some "Tylenol available in case of having a headache or grasp your bottle of champagne to celebrate," depending on who are you cheering for.

My position: AC Milan

AS LIVORNO - FC JUVENTUS Serie A Standing: AS Livorno 13th position, 21 points FC Juventus 3rd position, 37 points

It is a fact that Livorno Coach Camolese has made a positive impact in the team after Livorno was in the very last position of the Serie A, now they are in the 13th with 21 points. Imagine if Milan lose against Genoa and Livorno beat Juventus, Livorno will be having the same "24 points" of MILAN. Unbelievable!!!!

Juventus has the obligation to win if wanting to pursue the Scudetto. Thing is that Livorno has not lose in the last nine matches (5 wins and 4 draws)! So, either Livorno win or there will be a draw.

Problem is that a draw for Juventus is like saying "bye bye Scudetto." Right now there are 12 points difference with Inter. Last option for Juventus will be to reach the top 4 teams to qualifiy for next year's Champions League.

Problems keep adding for Juventus Coach Claudio Ranieri and the long list of injured players: defender Giorgio Chiellini, Jonathan Zebina, Mauro Camoranesi, Jorge Andrade and even the main "guarantee' SAINT GOALKEEPER GIGI BUFFON! Last hope for Juve will be their strikers: David Trezeguet, Alessandro Del Piero, and Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Problems for Livorno include the absences of Martin Bergvold, Nico Pulzetti, Fausto Rossini, Francesco Volpe and ex Juventus Giuliano Giannichedda. Advantage for Livorno is forward Francesco TAVANO,

My prediction: Juventus

UDINESE - FC INTER Serie A Standing: Udinese 5th position, 32 points FC Inter 1st position, 49 points

Here is a "NOTHING CHANGE MATCH." I mean the Serie A Standing will not change either if Udinese lose or Inter lose. Inter is the "lone ranger for the Scudetto" with 7 points ahead of the second place which is Roma. Udinese is in the 5th position with 32 points, 7 points ahead of the 6th position which is Atalanta, plus Sampdoria, Genoa, and Palermo all with 25 points.

Although the last match between Inter and Udinese ended 0 - 0, Inter might struggle again to win this match. Apparently, Inter players are out of focus. Maybe Inter are focusing too much on the Champions League match against Liverpool. This can be an advantage for Udinese. Yet, I don't think it will be wise for Inter to lose concentration in the Serie A. Although for Roma, it will be great because they just need Inter to lose 2 matches and 1 draw to be even.

Parma almost beat Inter, scaring them enough for almost 80 minutes, until a last minute goal by Ibrahimovic saved Inter from a defeat. Then, in the Coppa Italia Inter made a draw with Juventus. Udinese, with the great return of forward Antonio Di Natale might surprise Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Challenge here will be for Inter's defense to control Di Natale. Marco Materazzi can be the key man for Inter besides the "undisputable Inter Savior ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC." Problem for Udinese is to execute a plan to break Inter's defense because they have only conceded 13 goals in 19 matches.

Problems for Udinese coach Pasquale Marino are the absences of Asamoah Gyan, who is playing in the African Cup, and the injured Giampiero Pinzi. The good news is the return of defender Dias Felipe and Gokhan Inler after suspension.

Problem for Inter, is the long list of injured players: goalkeeper Francesco Toldo, midfielder Luis Figo, Olivier Dacourt, defender Walter Samuel and Dejan Stankovic. Good news is the return of Patrick Vieira after injury. Plus, forward David Suazo is also ready to be a super sub. Despite injured players, Inter has a "TOP BENCH." I don't think Inter struggle to find super subs, where they are struggling is in keeping concentration. Inter's worst enemy is Inter itself.

Danger for Udinese is Inter's control of the midfield. Esteban Cambiasso is the one to stop, this will give a chance to Udinese tridenti Antonio Di Natale, Fabio Quagliarella and Simone Pepe to concrete goal opportunities.

My suggestion for Roberto Mancini will be to start with Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Argentinian Julio Cruz in the attack instead of Argentinian Hernan Crespo who has not been that effective compared to his compatriot Julio Cruz.

Billiard Gloves. To wear them or not to wear them.

Billiard gloves are a pretty popular item in the billiard supplies department. I have owned a couple different brands in the 20 plus years of playing pool and billiard games.

I normally do not wear gloves when I play unless I am having a challenge with my bridge hand sticking to the pool cue.

You will find quite a few players wearing billiard gloves in the pool leagues. I have noticed they are more common with new players or beginners. You will even find a few of the pro players wearing gloves if you watch pool on television.
There are 2 main reasons for wearing gloves while playing pool. The first is to eliminate your hand sticking to the cue and dragging down your stroke. The second is to help keep your hand from turning colors from the billiards chalk on the pool table.

There are several types of billiard gloves to choose from. I have included a link where you can find a variety of gloves on sale now. Find Billiard Gloves Here

I have found that wearing the gloves does not feel natural to me and may take away from my concentration a bit. I am very comfortable with my closed tripod bridge and have no problem with the cue being sticky most of the time.

I do however have a problem with my hand being covered with billiards chalk. If you are new to the game and just learning how to use a closed bridge, I would recommend a glove. This will make the cue slide between your fingers with ease.

I encourage your thoughts, comments and questions on this blog and would love to hear from you. Please post a comment if only to say hello.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sports-guidance.blogspot.com/2008/01/billiard-gloves-to-wear-them-or-not-to.html' title='Billiard Gloves. You don't have to be a certain age or height and it doesn't take much physical strength to play the game.

We had a table in my parents basement when I was growing up and I have been hitting the balls around ever since I can remember. You might say that playing pool has always been a pretty big part of my life.
We have many billiards leagues here in Pueblo Colorado and you will find players of all ages and sizes. There are a couple billiards leagues that allow minors 18 and above to play and several Rec. rooms with no age limits. We have a 10 year old in town who has been playing league for several years and he is quite competitive.

We also have a couple pool players in wheel chairs as well as a few other disabilities. Pool is a great sport that everyone can play.

I play in the BCA National Billiards Tournament every May in Las Vegas. There you will find players of all ages, male and female who all play pretty strong. You better run out or control the table with a safety when you get a shot or you may have no chance to win.

My five year hold has already been shooting pool here and there for a few years now. He started out standing on an ice chest and then went to a milk crate. He is just now able to start shooting from the floor.

His game could be good if he would get into practicing and playing by himself once in a while. He always wants me or his mom to play with him. He loses interest fairly quick right now, but I am sure that as he gets better, the game will get in his blood.

Playing pool is a great way to pass the time. If you are competitive it's a great way to compete. If you are a pool player, Have you studied the fundamentals of billiards?

I would recommend taking a course and or reading a book about the fundamentals of pool and billiards. Try typing pool billiards tips into google and see what you come up with.

The Paintball Marker

I'm sure you've heard of the sport of paintball and all of the fun that those that enjoy it, seem to associate it with it. Well, within this great action sport are a number of things that may at first confuse a newcomer to the sport. One of those terms is that of the paintball marker.

Basically, it's as simple as saying paintball gun and that's exactly what a paintball marker is. What you may be wondering is why in the world do they call it a marker rather than a gun?
Ultimately the reason it's called a marker is because of the fact that they were first (as some speculate) used by forest rangers to 'mark' trees and stray cattle. Since it shot a ball of paint, paintball, and was used to mark it became known as a paintball marker.

Pretty simple huh?

Again, if you are new to the sport you may be amazed at first to find out just how much power one of these has. They are known to easily shoot their ammo at a rate of three hundred or more feet per second. That's as fast as a bow and arrow, also as fast as some 'real' guns on the market.

Most consist of noting more than a barrel, a body, a hopper and an air canister. The paintballs stay in the hopper and as one is shot out of the barrel another drops into the hopper. The air canister consists of compressed air that, when the trigger is pulled, releases an explosion of that air which then propels the ball out through the barrel.

That's it. That's the very basics of it all. As with everything that has a passionate following such as this sport, there is a plethora of manufactured equipment available on the market for those that are just getting started or those that are more advanced.

Additionally, there is a large market of custom designed and styles available as well. So, the only thing that really affects what you end up with for a paintball marker is your own personal taste, skill level and how really bad you want one.

Cold Weather Steelhead Fishing

Well it is a new year now and we have been dealing with cold weather for over a month and I have noticed while out on the river that some Fishermen are still using their same Steelhead fishing tactics. This made me think that it may be a good time to write an article about cold weather fishing. This time of year can be quite productive if you change your tactics just a little. This article is for those of us that enjoy being out on our favorite river even though the weather has turned cold. One of the reasons I enjoy this time of year is that most of the time you can have the river or stream to yourself, its not hard to find a nice secluded spot to enjoy the river or stream.
The main thing to remember when fishing in cold weather is to dress appropriately you can not enjoy your self if you are cold! You should also be aware of the unique challenges that cold weather presents. You guides on your pole will freeze waxing you guides helps put there is know way to completely stop this from happening. Walking along the bank of the river can be treacherous, when ever possible I will kick some sand or gravel out onto the bank giving just a little more traction to the frozen bank.

Cold weather steelhead fishing is going to be tougher than when you were fishing in late October the water temperature has cooled down and so has the fishing. However with a few simple changes to your fishing tactics you will still be able to catch some nice fish. Remember to us smaller baits, lures, and jigs. The water this time of year is normally crystal clear and cold making the steelhead just that much harder to entice into taking your hook. The smaller baits and lures are less likely to spook the steelhead and they are also more likely to hit smaller baits this time of year. I prefer to use the paler colors this time of year however I think this is more a matter of personal preference than anything else. Use slow presentations due to the fact that the fish will be less active, move a little further up into the hole the steelhead hold hear now because it takes less energy for them to hold in the current. Fish some of the deeper holes that you know the steelhead now are in a holding pattern and are looking for places that offer the some security and where they do not need to spend much energy to stay in the holes. Use lighters lines and just enough wait so that you feel the bottom every once in a while the steelhead are even more likely to be right on the bottom this time of year.

You can further your success by paying close attention to the weather and moon phases as mentioned in a previous article the weather and phases of the moon. As these two factors have a major impact on the way fish react and their activity during the day. Most of all be patent the steelhead have slowed down and it takes just that much more time to provoke a response from them. Don't expect to be able to hook into one with every cast you may have to drift buy them a dozen or more times before they decide to strike.

So stay warm enjoy the experience and may you have a great New Year Fishing!

Leupold VX-III Riflescopes- Exceptional Quality and Performance

Cutting Edge of Riflescope Technology

Leupold Rifle Scopes have earned the reputation of being a high quality, dependable optic which will survive almost anything that a hunting experience can deal out. The following article will guide you towards the right scope for the application.

Long Range Riflescopes serve a variety of functions to different users depending on the application. They obviously help the end user aim and align with the end target aiding in precise shot placement. Long range riflescopes also use multi-power magnification to aid shooters with poor or aging eyesight. There are also instances, hunters need to obtain a precise look at their game (example verify small buck or doe) before they proceed with the hunt. Estimation of the distance of the target is also a feature.
There is also a very good reason to use long range riflescopes on your hunting rifle or target shooter- simplicity. Long range riflescopes are not at all the fastest method of sighting your target. The fastest would be the open or iron sights that came on your rifle. However, scopes are the simplest. With the open sights, you have to align the front and back sight along with your target. Once a scope has been aligned properly, all the user needs to do is place the crosshairs or reticle on the target.

Long range riflescopes are produced more powerful every year. Consumers can get caught up in the technology and can be lured into more power than they actually need and can use. The average deer rifles use riflescopes that are in the magnification range of 3x-9x. That is the scope will magnify the object 3 times to 9 times its actual size.

Listed below are common riflescope terminology and features that are used on common riflescopes.

Magnification:

Several factors and considerations go into choosing a magnification or power range. First understand that higher the magnification or power, the less light the scope will transmit. Also higher power ranges narrows the field of view which means that through your scope at 80 yards you could be looking at a hairy patch rather than the full deer. The 3x-9x power range is a good choice for average deer rifles. Shotgun or muzzleloaders need even lower power settings of 2x due to their lower ranges. For long range target shooting higher power scopes such as a 6x-20x are OK.

Variable vs Fixed:

As mentioned earlier a variable power scope has an adjustable magnification range such as the 3x-9x. This means the scope has an infinite adjustment within the 3 to 9 magnification range. Fixed scopes are simply fixed on one magnification level such as the 3x. Some people prefer the fixed due to the simplicity. For short range applications such as small game hunting with 22 rifles the fixed scopes can be a good application. Most scopes used are variable power scopes.

Objective Lens:

The objective lens is a lens in long range riflescopes that is at the output end. The objective lens are identified on a riflescope by its size namely its diameter in mm. For instance a scope with a 40 objective lens means that the diameter is 40mm. For medium range scopes a 40mm to 44mm size range is the most popular. Larger sizes are available and can have both positive and negative attributes. The larger the objective lens the more light it will transmit, however, it also increases the overall diameter of the scope making it larger and more difficult to mount. The larger the objective lens the higher, the scope will have to be mounted causing the rifle to be cumbersome to handle. Leupold has addressed this problem on their newer models by indenting the bottom of the objective lens closer to the scope. This allows a larger objective lens while maintaining the scope mounting height approximately the same.

Scope Identification :

Long range riflescopes are commonly identified by the magnification range and the objective lens size. For example, 3-9X40 scope means that the scope has an adjustable 3x-9x magnification range and a 40mm objective lens. Almost all the scope manufacturers identify their products in this manner.

Tube size:

Most long range riflescopes have the main tubes either 1 inch in diameter or 30mm in diameter. Knowing the main tube diameter is important in mounting and knowing what size rings to mount the scope to the rifle.

Parallax and Adjustable Objectives:

Parallax is a term used that can be hard to understand. A simpler way to look at it is the variation of the placement of the eye looking into the scope. In other words, each time you look in the long range riflescope with your eye, it will not be in the same spot. This could affect the focus of the scope. Adjustments for this is made at the objective lens and scopes with this feature is said to have adjustable objectives. This feature is generally not needed for scopes with power settings 10 or lower.

Coating:

Most scopes have coatings on their lenses. These coating qualities can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. These coatings do reduce the glare and loss of light. The more coating applied normally improve the light transmission and contrast.

Field of view:

This is simply a measurement of the left to right distance that you can see through the long range riflescope at a set distance. Normally this distance is at 100 yards. As the scope power level is increased the field of view (FOV) is decreased. As the power level is decreased the FOV is increased.

Minutes of Angle (MOA):

This is basically an option or feature on a long range riflescope that will adjust the point of impact of the bullet to the target. These adjustments are normally made in 1/4 inch adjustments at 100 yards. If your bullet hole is 1 inch low at a 100 yard target you can adjust by adjusting the MOA by 4 clicks which would be 1 inch at 100 yards. The adjustment is linear based off of the 100 yards. For example if the bullet is low by inch at 200 yards only 2 clicks are required to adjust.

Use Ground Leverage to Generate Power

What does throwing a baseball and swinging a golf club have in common? They both use the ground to add some power to a motion. You wouldn't get anything on your throw or hit the ball very far if you didn't. You wouldn't think of throwing a baseball without pushing off on your back foot, would you? Often, leveraging the ground is a natural tendency. But sometimes it's not.

Ground leverage in golf is the same principle applied in every day actions like walking, skipping a stone over the water, or closing a car door. Ground leverage enables you to add thrust and power to your action. In golf, this ability must be learned. And that takes concentration and work. But once you've mastered the mechanics of ground leverage, it can have an enormous impact on your swing and your golf handicap.

Start with the Setup Your setup has a lot to do with how much ground leverage is in your swing, so we will begin there. To create ground leverage, you need to make some setup changes. The five golf tips below will help you leverage the ground when swinging a golf club. * Widen your stance * Flare your back foot in * Flare your front foot out * Use a trigger * Transfer your weight

The changes in your setup are minor, but taken together they have a profound effect on distance. Begin by widening your stance slightly to shoulder length (measuring from the inside of your foot.) Flare your back foot in slightly to create a solid coiling post to support your backswing as well as your torso rotation and weight transfer. Also, flare your front foot out slightly. This setup may feel a bid odd at first. But it doesn't restrict your ability to turn. More importantly, it stops you from twisting you hip, producing a reverse pivot.

With a reverse pivot, you do the opposite of what you should do when transferring wieght. Instead of transferring your weight to your back foot and then to your front foot when swinging, you (1) transfer your weight to your front foot during your takeaway, and then (2) transfer it back to your back foot during the follow through. This sequence constricts your body turn, short-circuiting power and inhibiting consistency. Golfers with a reverse pivot don't get much on their drives or iron shots.

Get Comfortable Since this setup is new, take a few practice backswings to get used to the feel of it. You should sense a lighter coil. Notice also how your front foot points forward with your toe open toward the target—almost as though you were stepping forward to throw a ball. This open foot position offers the best leverage into the forward swing.

The open foot position also encourages your weight to shift and allows your rotation to powerfully unwind your hips, arms, shoulders, and hands with full acceleration. On the way back down, use ground leverage to create the dynamic weight transfer and acceleration that produces power—the kind of power that drives a ball for distance and helps lower golf handicaps.

Add a Trigger In addition to using ground leverage, many golfers with low golf handicaps add a trigger to the process. Some players push the front knee slightly towards the target. This move acts as a forward press, triggering their swings both mechanically and psychologically. It also helps build up rhythm, another contributor to power. Gary Player uses his knee. Jack Nicklaus turns his heads slightly to the right. Use whatever works for you.

Using ground leverage can have an enormous impact on your golf scores and your golf handicap. Ground leverage takes advantage of a simple principle that we use every day with a wide variety of actions. In golf's case, using ground leverage must be learned and mastered, whether through golf lessons or on your own. Once mastered, it helps you drive the ball longer and straighter.

Teens Muscle Building Dangers And Benefits

Teens can gain from muscle building in a series of ways. Muscle Building is of course a considerable way of keeping in shape and maintaining perfect health. Although muscle building can concede you far superior rewards than a simple nice body. Read on to learn more.

A number of parents are worried about the sort of effects intense exercises, such as those required for muscle building, can bring about to a teen's body. A teen's body, as we all realize, experience a number of natural changes. Therefore, parents are worried that the extra strain of intense exercises might turn out harmful to the teen's growth.
Until there is no actual proof to suppose that exercising can harm bodily development most gym instructors are of the opinion that teenage bodybuilders often suffer from a singular problem that has much to do with their being a teen. This matter concerns the normal impulsiveness associated to being a teen. Teens like breaking rules and disobeying instructions, while this might be a fun thing to do generally in the gym while exercising with weights nothing could be more prejudicial than being a rebel. Muscle Building is all about discipline, and teens do not, as a rule, enjoy discipline. This is the single problem that plagues all teenage bodybuilders.

Numerous people presume that working with heavyweights can stop bones from growing. They support their claim by pointing out that lifting heavy weights can accelerate the closure of growth plates, thereby stopping their growth far before they are supposed to. While this argument sounds watertight it is yet to be verified as true. Also, groups opposed to this idea have pointed out that most professional athletes (several of whom had begun training with heavyweights at a juvenile age) have not strictly adhered to this law and remained stunted. Therefore, as of now, there seems to be no evident proof to propose whether or not weights affect a particular individual's growth.

Although working out with especially heavy weights does indeed have an affect on the bones of teens even then none of them are truly at risk. This is because such an effect can truly be harmful merely before a teen reaches a certain level of maturity, and majority of teens attain the full range of their growth by over and about the age of 15. Now, surely no 13 or 14 year old will be pumping iron to build his body and thereby getting his bones all arrested!

Aside from the growth subject there is the issue, which we previously discussed and which concerns the basic problem of being a 'teen'. Most teens feel out of place being neither adults nor children, as a result they try to accelerate their life and 'grow up' quicker than they are likely to naturally. This 'quickening' causes many of them to try and imitate everything from the walk to the talk and even the workout regimes of their seniors. Obviously this can turn out a disaster since teens are not technically supposed to do things that an adult does. A full grown bodybuilder has far more stamina and knowledge than a common teen, as a result imitating him can prove taxing and even dangerous for a young teen.

To ensure that they don't end up hurting themselves real bad by trying and imitating better trained adults all teenage bodybuilders should preferably hire a trainer for themselves.

GlobalGolf & Golf Shoes Only - Your Online Superstore For All Your Golfing Needs!

Today, I want to showcase an online golf store that offers every item of golf equipment and accessories that you might need. GlobalGolf / GolfShoesOnly have been online since 2001 and are the market leaders in bringing golfers of all abilities great deals on new, used, and certified pre-owned golf clubs as well as a selection of over 40,000 name brand golf shoes. As the leading seller of used golf clubs on eBay, they have now launched this site to showcase great deals on exclusive close-out and used golf clubs.
The staff at Global Golf is comprised of PGA professionals, several former assistant professionals, national award-winning merchandisers and even a former touring professional. This specialized knowledge of the game and industry allows them to deliver great deals to you!

Although they sell an enormous selection of new golf clubs, equipment and golf balls, I want to concentrate on, what I consider, their specialty - Certified Preowned Golf Clubs.

If you search online, you will see more and more golf websites are promoting Certified Preowned Golf Clubs, but what exactly are Certified Preowned Golf Clubs? Many of these sites don't specify what they mean by a "certified" preowned golf club, but GlobalGolf make it their business to let you know what you can expect from their certified clubs. Below is a list from GlobalGolf.com explaining what factors they use to certify a pre-owned club:

 1. 6 Point Inspection - Detailed Cleaning of the Entire Club 2. Cosmetic Evaluation 3. Structural Integrity of the Club Head 4. Structural Integrity of the Shaft 5. Grip Replacement 6. New Manufacturer Head-Cover

For more peace of mind they also add a 12 month warranty to all their certified preowned golf clubs. So the question is - are they really worth it? Consider the difference between buying a used golf club and buying a certified preowned golf club - with a used golf club you have no idea or guarantee of the quality or structural integrity of the club, but with certified preowned golf clubs from GlobalGolf you know, from the 6 point check list above, what you will receive. Also, from the website, when you look through the choice of certified golf clubs available you will see beside each club a rating system that lets you know at a glance the condition of the golf club. The ratings go from Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. Needless to say, the majority of their certified clubs are in the top 2 or 3 ratings. Another factor is price; when you consider that you can expect to pay only 10% or 20% more for a certified preowned golf club compared to a used golf club, then I think that it is more than worth it.

So, if you are looking to buy a top brand name golf club like Callaway, Adams, Cleveland, Nike or Wilson but can't afford the price, your best bet is a certified preowned golf club from GlobalGolf.com When you consider you can buy an "Excellent" rated Nike Sasquatch Sumo Squared Driver or a Cleveland HiBore XL Driver for about half the price of a new one, with a 12 month warranty, 6 point inspection, a grip replacement and a new manufacturer head cover - you are indeed getting a great deal.

By the way, GlobalGolf.com are also well renowned for their refurbished used top brand name golf balls and their clearance / closeout top brand name golf bags.

Force India Set on the Fast Lane of the 2008 F1 Calendar

Force India is the recently conformed Formula One team; just last October 2007 two billionaires Michiel Mol and Vijay Mallya acquired the Spyker F1 team for approximately 88 million Euros. The team's headquarters are located in Northamptonshire, United Kingdom and their spokesman has made it official that the German Adrian Sutil, and the Italians Luizzi and Giancarlo Fischella will be driving during the 2008 scheduled season.
For Mallya it is quite clear all beginnings are difficult but he expects a reasonable season..."I do not for a minute underestimate the challenges before me and my team," Mallya said after announcing the budget for the season as $120 million, an increase of $50 million from last year.

The 2008 season will be an experiment as the team will be using Ferrari engines throughout the year; a deal which could be extended until 2010; the Indian Flag and logo will be used as well. This decision has dual purposes besides promoting the team as Indian presence it has been reported the Indian Olympic Association has come to terms with F1 Boss Ecclestone to hold a Grand Prix in New Delhi starting in 2009.

If the Indian GP organizers are able to meet with all Formula One racing demands and standards; New Delhi will become the fifth new location to be added to the racing calendar along with Valencia, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and South Korea. Concerning the drivers Mr. Mallya stated "I had to choose the drivers very, very carefully because here is a team that also needs to learn,". Fischella will be leading the team in their debut season the 34-year-old Italian believes in the opportunity given as the best option he has had in recent time to show his skills "At the test in Jerez, I was very impressed with the team's professionalism and commitment to move forward and I hope that my experience will help them achieve these goals." Said Fischella.

Alongside will be Adrian Sutil whose last year's performance impressed many and who stated "I am also very excited about the opportunity to work with Giancarlo. He is very experienced and has driven for a World Championship winning team, which can only help both myself and Force India learn and move forward." And lastly but not least important is former Toro Rosso and Red Bull Italian driver Luzzi who will be the official test and reserve driver.

For the moment we are just waiting for the team to release information on their new car and their first test driving which could be announced any time soon.

A Good Golfer Is A Relaxed Golfer

When you watch professional golf on television, one thing stands out and that is how relaxed the pros at this game seem to be. To use that old saying, they almost make it seem easy to play great golf. It's deceptive to anyone who is not familiar with the sport to see that, because it makes it appear as though the game of golf is "easy" and requires no effort whatsoever.

If you are just getting started in the game of golf, you have discovered something those golf pros we watch and admire so much already know. Golf is far from easy. In fact, it is one of the most difficult sports to master and yet once you start learning how to play golf, you become driven to try to conquer it.

One reason golf is so challenging is that it is truly a sport that calls for a combination of physical skill with mental discipline. To successfully accomplish even a fairly simple putt or drive requires significant amounts of focus and concentration. And your mental state not only on the day of your game but on each individual shot is critical to your success.

The ability to stay relaxed and put themselves into a relaxed state while playing golf that we see in the great players of the pro circuit does not come from golf being easy. These great players have learned to put themselves into a relaxed frame of mind because that is the way you go about playing great golf. In other words, relaxation is not an outcome of golf, relaxation is one of the key weapons you use to be successful at golf.

When you start your "approach" to address the ball for a drive or a putt, there are is a lot of focus you must place on putting your body in the right position for the shot. The actual swing is a combination of powerful athletic ability that is confined and focused on that one moment in time for a very short duration of time. To accomplish this kind of physical precision, your body has to be able to respond to your demands like a well oiled machine.

Even the smallest amount of tension can create big problems at that moment of the swing of the club. So an "internal skill" golfers who become really good at the sport are to be able to summon is to relax at a moment's notice so their body remains loose and flexible to perform when it's called upon.

So how do you teach yourself to get relaxed for golf and stay that way over a game that can go on for hours if not all day? Well much of it is attitude. All of us have problems in life and it's easy to bring them to the golf course. But if you a mulling over your kid's bad grades or that promotion at work you didn't get, you are going to get tense and play a bad round of golf.

So you have to develop skills of putting those stresses and worries "on the shelf" for a few hours. When you can do that, you can then focus on happier thoughts and allow a mental relaxation to settle in. This is one of many ways that golf gives us good life skills too because the ability to manage your state of mind and when and where you will "worry" about things puts a lot of control in your hands over your anxieties in life in general.

It's a discipline to go through this cycle intentionally and on demand wherein you put life's struggles aside for a few hours and put yourself into a state of mental and physical relaxation. To speed the process of learning this discipline, sometimes Yoga or meditation classes are helpful. These classes also can teach you good posture and how to control your breathing, both of which are big skills you will need on the golf course.

But however you learn to relax, you will begin to see the results immediately when your golf swing becomes more accurate and you start shooting better golf on a consistent basis. And that will pay you back for learning how to relax. But more importantly, it will make the act of playing golf fun again. And that is why you got into the sport in the first place.

Quickly & Easily Getting Into Shape For Golf

One reason why golf is one of the most popular sports in the world is that you can find a way to enjoy it even if you are just a beginner. And while golf is enjoyable on many levels, it is also tremendously challenging for just about any skill level of player so you never feel that you are out of place on the golf course just because you are having trouble getting the skills down.

But it always helps to have a jump start on the game before you go out with more experienced players. And there are some things you can do to reduce the amount that you appear to be "a rookie" when you head out to the golf course for nine or eighteen holes.

Doing your homework in advance will reduce the amount of "stupid questions" you ask of your more seasoned pals in the game. Just think how you will feel if you go out for your first round of golf ever and your buddies know that but you can converse intelligently about the scoring system, the uses of the various clubs and the nuances of the game, just like an old pro.

So use your enthusiasm for the game of golf to do some reading and "hang out" on some golfing blogs and websites. Each time you hear a new term or don't understand something about it, ask questions on the message board, in a golf chat room or on a blog. Better for nameless internet golfers to know you are new to this than your pals you want to impress.

Besides knowledge, probably the thing that broadsides rookie golfers the most is the physical demands of the game. In watching golfers on TV, they never seem to break a sweat. That is because they are already in shape for golf. Golfing involves quite a bit of walking and often times you will be carrying your own clubs. This can be quite a physical shock if you are not used to it.

So get toned up on your exercise for a few weeks before you hit the golf course and you will cut down on how much you limp around by the 18th hole. Some brisk walks with the dog or time on the treadmill can do a lot to get your legs up to speed and improve your wind as well so you can get through a vigorous game without difficulty.

Being in shape will also improve your game. If you are huffing and puffing by the 3rd hold, you are going to make some pretty bad shots. And when you are having trouble maintaining a good posture for your shot, it will be apparent to your buddies why you are struggling and you might take some ribbing for being a little flabby for the game. So steal their thunder and get in shape for golf.

Finally, a few golf lessons never killed anyone. You can get some time on the driving range or book a few hours with the local golf pro to get your basics down so when you step out there with your friends, you already have a jump start on being good at the game. If the golf pro works at the course you are going to play with your associates, he will be glad to keep your secret that you got some help to be ready to impress them on your first drive of the game.

Putting some upfront preparation to be ready for the game when you start playing will make it more fun for you and for your friends. You will learn faster and play better which will only make your love of the game more intense and make you want to be out there even more than you already are. And if it means you play better and surprise a few people because, for a rookie, you are in pretty good shape for golf, then the preparation time will be well worth the effort.

Why It Is Time To Start Paying College Athletes

For quite some time now, there has been a big debate about whether or not college athletes should be paid. Some people believe that a scholarship should be payment enough. After all, a scholarship can be easily worth $15,000 - $25,000 or more per year, plus a career after college that can be worth a million dollars over a lifetime. Additionally, student athletes receive all kinds of perks while they are in college, like staying at fancy hotels, being seen on national tv, and all of the notoriety that goes with being a stare athlete. Its hard to put a price tag on all of that.
However, considering the fact that certain college sports generate millions of dollars for college athletic programs, many people believe the athletes are being used. If the average football scholarship is worth $20,000 per year, yet the university gains $70,000 per year in revenue per scholarship player (please note that this figure is just an estimate - the actual number may actually be higher), the university will profit $50,000 per year, per scholarship player, or $200,000 over a four year period.

It is very difficult to put a numeric value on exactly how much an athlete is worth to a college. A star quarterback will not only help sell tickets, but will bring in plenty of merchandise sales as well. The NCCA won't allow the universities to sell a college football jersey with a player's name on it, but they will sell the jersey with the player's number on it, which is easily recognizable in local, and sometimes national markets. The major colleges earn enormous sums of money on this kind of merchandise alone, yet the student athlete who's number is being used to sell merchandise will not see one dime of the profits. To say that the student athlete isn't being exploited in this situation is an understatement.

It goes way beyond that. College athletic programs rake in millions from television and advertising contracts. They also bring in millions of dollars of donations from sports boosters. Yes, salaries need to be paid to athletic directors and coaches, not to mention travel and other costs for the student athletes, and it is great that major college football and basketball programs help fund non-revenue athletic programs. However, the fact of the matter is that, compared to the amount of revenue that student athletes generate for their colleges, what they receive in return is very small.

Here's where it gets really interesting. An athlete can be "disciplined" for selling their tickets to a fan on game day, yet how much money do the directors of the NCAA earn as a result of the efforts of the student athletes? The reality is that the college athletes quite literally pay for a large portion of the salaries of every person employed by the NCAA. If an executive from the NCAA is able to drive a Mercedes, he can thank a star quarterback or running back for that, and perhaps even several walk ons.

So here is the point: if the NCAA, coaches, and athletic directors can earn huge sums of money from the student athletes, shouldn't student athletes have a piece of the pie too? This isn't to say that college athletes should get paid large amounts of money, but it would definitely be nice if their scholarships would pay them a little extra to go out for pizza every once and a while, or buy some nice clothes - just a little extra spending cash as a way of saying "thanks" for their efforts.

If for some reason college athletes could be paid, that opens up a whole new can of worms. All of the athletes on a football team with 125 players work very hard in practice, but only 11can start on offense and defense - do you only pay the starters?. Additionally, if you were to pay more to the star quarterback than you do for an "ok" receiver, you are going to run into a lot of other problems. Having said this, the first thing you want to avoid with paying college athletes is student athletes squabbling how much money they earn or should earn, which happens frequently in the NFL.

The second thing you want to avoid is an uneven playing field. While some colleges at the division I level could afford to pay athletes, many simply don't bring in enough revenue. If a student athlete knows he can earn more at USC than he will if he plays for his state university, then the playing field becomes more uneven than it already is. Athletes would almost always choose the "money schools" over other colleges. Technically, this happens today more than people realize, because colleges with the most tradition, best coaches, and the best records are usually the colleges with the most money...but, if one college could afford to pay more to athletes than other colleges, the playing field would be even more uneven.

If you are going to start paying athletes, all of the athletes need to be paid the same amount of money, and all of the colleges would need to have the same amount of money to pay their athletes with, which could be pre-determined by the NCAA. Even if this amount was a small amount like $1,000 PER YEAR, per player (which totals ($125,000 per year for a college football team with 125 players), paid every month during the school year, it would be a lot more fair to the student athletes...and most colleges at the Division I level could certainly afford it. For the few colleges that couldn't afford it, the NCAA could always put up the extra money out of the millions it generates from the bowl game. Another alternative would be to cut the salaries of every executive of the NCAA who has gotten rich off of NCAA athletics by 25%- and give the difference to the athletes...

Most of this article focused on college football programs. The revenues that are generated from basketball programs are even more staggering, considering that the teams, are smaller, the travel expenses are less expensive, and that fewer scholarships need to be handed out, making the profits that the NCAA earns from college basketball programs even more staggering.

How to Achieve a Great Golf Swing and Hit the Green

A great golf swing isn’t just about your arms, the strength in your shoulders or the quality of your club - it’s about form, the turn of your back, the swivel of your feet and the full motion of the golf swing. Every golfer wants to hit the green on his first shot off a tee, but it’s not so easy. Here are 4 simple ways to hit the green more often on every drive and add power to your drives.
1. Create some leverage

Don't pick up the club in your backswing without bracing and grounding your right leg. During your crucial backswing, brace your right leg so you can transfer your weight to your right hip and leg and push down on the grip of your club with your right palm as a way to leverage the club up.

2. Stretch out your lead arm

Try not to bend your left elbow to lift your club. This destroys your coil, your swing width and, subsequently, your swing strength. When you get your arms up for the swing, get your left arm stretched out.

Stretch your left shoulder so it’s behind your ball and extend that left arm as far as you can. This positioning gets you a great swing width and not only increases your power, but also the speed of your drive.

3. Shift your body forward

Refrain from pulling your body backwards like you’re letting your club pull you away from the ball. You don’t want to lead with your back foot and have the club steal your momentum. Remember, you’re in charge of the club, not the other way around.

Instead, begin your downswing by moving weight on to your left hip. Shift your weight through your left leg and feel it all the way through to your left heel. This motion gets your club down and your power centered.

4. Follow through

Follow every shot through, right to the finish and let your shoulders and your arms guide the direction of the ball as you bring your swing to completion. Remember, a powerful swing doesn’t stop once you make contact with the ball, it follows the momentum through.

When following through, keep your form with a good grip and bring your leading arm back.

Other swing techniques include investing in stiffer clubs, distance balls or even swing analysis, but probably the best investment you can make in your swing is practice. Focus on your form first, then back it up with speed and power.

Recreational Running: How to Avoid and Manage Running Related Injuries

Most runners whether recreational or professional will agree with me that they have been forced out of running one or more times by running related injuries. Whereas it is a fact that running injuries happen, preventing them is worth all the effort and when they happen, knowing how to deal with them is crucial. Recreational running is a fun sport and anybody who is physically able can pursue it regardless of age. It is one of the most effective ways to lose extra body weight and keep it under control. Recreational running has also become a great social activity in our society today. Everyone who has incorporated it in their lifestyle knows the health benefits associated with it. Due to the increased number of people currently engaging in fun running, there are now more cases of running related injuries than there were few years back. I get asked all the time how one can deal with these injuries and since every case is different we are going to look at general ways to avoid or manage running related injuries.
Build your mileage gradually: It is human nature to try and accomplish as much as possible in life within a short time. For running unfortunately, doing too much too soon will only hurt you and discourage you from pursuing your favorite sport. This mainly applies to beginners more than advanced runners. It is important to remember that your body has to adjust to accommodate the any increased physical stress and it can only do so gradually. An increment of around 10 percent of your weekly mileage is enough after every 3 to 6 weeks. In other words, if you are doing 15 miles per week and you want to increase your mileage, you do not need to go past 16.5 miles per week. Bear in mind that your body will need up to 4 weeks to accommodate the increase comfortably.

Avoid running on hard surfaces: Most injuries associated with running are as a result of running on hard surfaces. I am sure there are trails or parks almost every location and making good use of them is paramount. If you like running along paved surfaces, at least make an effort to run on grass or dirt roads or trails once or twice every week. A good time is when you are doing one of your longer runs; it is refreshing to your legs. It is also important to avoid uneven surfaces as these may mess up the alignment of your body especially your legs and back.

Choose the right running shoe: I cannot stress this enough, but the condition of your running shoe greatly determines the number, type and frequency of running related injuries in your running pursuits. In other words, if you choose the wrong shoe type for your feet, the chances are that you be hurt even if the shoes are new. Sometimes you may have the right type of running shoe, but you have exceeded the mileage requirement for the shoe. If you are a beginner and you are not sure what type of running shoe to buy, get advice from running shoe expert or your trainer or more experienced runners. Avoid buying cheap shoe simply because of the price, it may cost you a fortune to treat injuries or even worse case stop you from running altogether.

Supplement recreational running with other activities: Our bodies need a break from running especially when we are tired. Since taking a break has its place in our running schedules, I recommend doing other activities that will yield similar benefits as running, but put less stress in our bodies. Swimming and biking are the two most common and effective supplements to running. Both of these activities lift the pressure away from your legs and in the process allow them to recover without you really taking time off from working out. If swimming is not enough, try running in the pool, this will surely give you a great workout. Swimming and biking are also great for rehabilitation after sustaining an injury.

Take time off from running: As mentioned earlier in this article, our bodies need time to accommodate the physical stress that we are inducing through running. The principle behind training in any sport is to improve performance. This happens through recovery and adaptation. The simple explanation of this fact is when you run you are stressing your muscles and other body systems and they can only be stressed to a certain level. Once that level is reached, fatigue sets in and if you do not stop, your body will break down. The best way to avoid breaking down due to fatigue is to take one or two days off every week from running. If you neglect taking time off, you are calling for trouble, you will get burnout or injured and you may not have a choice but to quit running.

Eat healthy and hydrate well: Most people use recreational running to lose extra weight or control their body weight. Due to bad advice, I have seen people running and still eating wrong foods and drinking highly dehydrating drinks. If the whole idea of running is to be healthy, then it does not make sense to counter that effect with bad eating habits. There is no right or wrong, I believe moderation is the key. Eating a desert once in a while is great and fun, eating it after every meal... well, you can answer that for yourself. It is a fact that carbonated drinks when taken excessively only help to dehydrate your body. Drinking water and non-carbonated sports drinks are highly recommended. Supplements and vitamins also go along way in keeping you away from injuries. So remember always to eat enough to supply just enough energy to meet your daily demands, but not excess that will be stored as fats. Extra body weight makes your body more susceptible to injuries.

Get body massage and bone adjustment: Body massage and bone adjustment are necessary components of recreation running. When you workout, there is wear and tear of the muscles and tissue in your body resulting in waste products such as lactic acid. When these waste products build up in your body, they make your muscles and tissues stiff and as result vulnerable to injuries. Getting a full body massage often will help to get rid of this stiffness. The alignment of the bones may also become bad due to bad running surfaces. Visiting a chiropractor once in a while is a great idea in avoiding bone alignment related injuries.

The injury prevention ways suggested here will only help if you follow them. However it is not an exhaustive list. These are just suggestions that have been proven to work for both professional and recreational runners alike. The best advice when pursuing any sport is to be proactive in avoiding injuries, they are very expensive! Recreational running is fun.

Volleyball Rules for Contacting the Ball

Knowing the rules for playing the ball can make a big difference to your team's success.
It can be a very frustrating experience having your players constantly called for mishandling the ball. Coaching can be stressful enough without having to also worry about the officiating.

There are essentially two different types of ball handling playing faults - double contacts and lifts.

Thoroughly understanding these volleyball rules for playing the ball can make a huge impact on a volleyball team's success.

Double Contacts

Double contacts by a player are legal on a team's first contact. For example, when an opponent spikes the ball, the player playing defense can make a double contact in attempt to dig the ball. This double contact can be made as long as the contact is made in a single attempt to make the play.

A possible scenario for a player making a legal dig would be if the ball bounced off the player's forearms then shoulder.

As long as this play was made in one playing motion, this double contact is legal on the first team hit. Another way a player could make a dig is with an overhead setting motion with their hands.

It is legal to double contact with the fingers on the first team contact.

It is also legal to contact the ball multiple times when blocking. These contacts aren't team hits. A block is defined as a player near the net, reaching higher than the top of the net, then deflecting the ball coming from the opponent.

When blocking, the ball can be contacted multiple times in succession. These contacts during blocking aren't counted as contacts and the team still has the 3 team hits to return the ball back to the opponent.

Double contacts are illegal on the team's second or third team contacts. Since there are different volleyball rules for how you play the ball on the first hit compared to the second and third, it can often appear ball handling is being called inconsistent by the referee.

For example, it is legal to double contact the ball using a setting motion on the first team contact, but illegal on the second and third team contacts. It may appear the calls are inconsistent because they aren't being called for the double contact on the set on the first team contact.

Lift, Held Ball, or Prolonged Contact

Lifting, catching, or throwing the ball is illegal on any contact. It is important to note that bad technique isn't illegal.

For example, there is no fault for bad form or an ugly looking play. If it's not a double contact (on the 2nd or 3rd team hit) or a prolonged contact (ball coming to rest on a player), then the play is legal no matter how unorthodox or unusually the technique looks.

There are only two possible calls for an illegal play, double contact or lift, that's it.

Knowing the difference between a lift and a double contact is important. Since double contacts are legal on the first team hit, the contact must be a prolonged contact for it to be illegal no matter how ugly the play on the ball.

Some volleyball organizations allow for the ball to be slightly lifted or pushed when making a defensive play. This is when a player is digging a hard driven ball.

Also, players can have prolonged contact with the ball when in a joust. A joust doesn't count as a team contact. A joust is a block. When two opposing players are contacting the ball as the same time, they are blockers, not attackers, so prolonged contact during a joust is legal.

Top 10 considerations before starting your surfing class

If you are anything like us here then I’m sure you will agree with me when I say, bring on the sun let the temperatures rise and let’s head to the beach! If this summer is anything like last summer then I am also pretty sure record numbers of you are planning to try new activities like wake boarding, scuba diving and surfing while you are on your vacations. For those of you that are thinking about taking a surfing class here is a list of ten things to consider before you sign up:
1. What is your personal comfort level with the ocean? This is arguably the most important factor to consider before taking any surfing class. Keep in mind that until you progress out of the beginner stage you will spend a lot of time rolling around in the waves. During class you will be standing in water that is chest deep, waves will be crashing all around you and occasionally a wandering piece of seaweed will rub up against you. If you are not comfortable while in this environment you will never be able to focus on the task of surfing. This is not to say that those of you who are uncomfortable should go find something else to do. If you are uncomfortable then you should take a few days to become familiar with the environment you will be spending a lot of time in once your class starts.

2. How physically fit are you? Make no mistake about it surfing is a sport. It is physically demanding and under certain conditions can be very strenuous. As a beginner you will not be subjected to extremely strenuous conditions but you can count on going home every day with “noodle arms” and by the end of the class you will be sore in places that you didn’t even know you had muscles.

3. How dedicated are you to learning the sport? If you come to class expecting to go out in the water and immediately pop up to your feet on your first wave and hang ten then you are setting yourself up for a let down. Surfing is an activity that requires dedication. At some point during the class you will get frustrated. Those who succeed in class are the ones who battle through their frustrations.

4. How much time do you have to dedicate to the sport? You will get out of the sport exactly what you put into it. For most people a 1 week surf class is just barely enough time for them to begin to get the hang of the sport. However, it does give you enough time to develop the tools you will need to master the sport on your own after your class is over. For the average person you can expect to be a solid beginner after 30 water days.

5. What is your swimming ability? Simply put, if you can’t swim you shouldn’t be taking a surfing class. Swimming is an integral part of surfing and you put yourself in a high risk situation if you attempt to take a surfing class and do not know how to swim. If, however, you are an intermediate to strong swimmer you definitely can learn how to surf. If you have reservations about whether or not you are a good enough swimmer to attempt the sport make sure you discuss this with your instructor and he or she will be able to determine if the sport is right for you.

6. Where will your class be located? Most surfing spots have waves that break in a predictable fashion. This can vary from gently rolling peelers to pitching surging freight trains. Make sure you research where your class will be taught and you are comfortable with the conditions that exist there.

7. What time of year are you taking your class? Most surfing spots will vary in the type of waves they produce as the seasons change so it is important to research how the waves break at the beach where you will be surfing at during the time you plan on taking your class. As a general rule of thumb most areas experience smaller waves in the summer than they do in the winter, however, there are always exceptions. Check local weather conditions on the internet to determine the forecast for your beach.

8. What type of equipment will you be using? In the past five years there have been a number of innovations that have taken place in the surf board manufacturing industry. Surfers now have many options available to them with regards to the materials their boards are made from and the shapes of boards available. As a general rule of thumb it is easier to learn on a bigger board. Make sure the school you go to has boards that are 7-9 feet in length. Any smaller and you will just frustrate yourself, any longer and you will have trouble managing the board in the water. Preferable you want the board to be made from soft foam rather than fiberglass or epoxy but this is not as critical as size.

9. Who is your instructor? When researching schools take the time to talk to somebody that is involved with the instructing. Make sure all instructors are CPR and first aid certified. Also, make an attempt to interact with your instructor before you sign up to see if the two of you will get along. After all, the class is supposed to be fun and you won’t be having much fun if you do not like your instructor.

10. Did you pack your essentials? Always wear sunscreen, pack a hat, an umbrella. Have your board shorts and talk to your instructor about the right wetsuit or rash guard for you. You might also want to think about a hood, gloves, and other accessories. Keep a good attitude and have a good time.

How Sport Equipment Has Become a Huge Dollar Industry

The sports equipment business has grown from very humble beginnings to a multi-billion dollar industry in the last 100 years. What is the main thing that spurred this growth?
In some ways, you might say there has been a sports gear industry for thousands of years. Man has always engaged in sport and recreational activities whenever his quest for survival allowed him any leisure time at all. In ancient Rome, games like chariot races and gladiatorial contests entertained the people. It might be said that the suppliers of the chariots and the makers of swords were involved in industry, but in each case, the product was used for other things and was adapted to the sporting or leisure event.

Some early activities in the middle ages were the beginning of sports that were unique from other activities. Early sports such as golf, forms of tennis, and even fishing, began to demand specialized products. In was in the 19th century, perhaps, that the true beginning of the industry could be found. Some companies were formed that concentrated solely on the production of leisure activity products. Some of these early, small companies have grown into the industry giants of today.

In 1906, a number of these companies banded together to form the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SMGA). This organization was formed to promote the common interest of those involved in the manufacturing of items used for sports and recreation. The true growth spurt came in the years after World War I, when team sports such as baseball and football began to grow in popularity. Just about every major sporting activity traces its roots and early history to this period.

In 1957, the SMGA began operating a Sporting Goods Fair. This became the Super Show in 1986 and was the single largest Sporting Goods product show in the World. The SMGA has also been a political force. In 1997, it was instrumental in eliminating the use of child labor to produce soccer balls in Pakistan. It was not the SMGA that was causing the rapid growth of the industry, however. It was the technological revolution. Labor saving devices and machines in the work place and the home had given people more free time. This free time was being used for leisure activities.

At one time, sport and leisure was the reward of wealth and nobility. Today, this has changed. People have a lot of free time and every single sporting and recreational activity has experienced incredible growth in the last 50 years. The Sporting Goods Industry has profited from this growth by supplying the goods, but it has also helped spur the growth by making high quality, safe, and ever better products available to the public.

Purchase New or Used Sports Equipment?

One of the big decisions faced by many people seeking sports equipment is the choice between new or used. There are a number of pros and cons of each choice.
Is it better to buy new or used sports equipment? It is a question that is often asked by people who are new to a sport or a recreational activity. Obviously, the Sporting Goods store will encourage and support new equipment. They are in the business of selling new equipment while most used sports equipment is sold by individuals or in yard sales and flea markets.

The major consideration and the one that seems to point most people in search of used equipment is cost. There is no question that most new Sporting Goods equipment is fairly expensive. Great bargains and savings can be had by those who seek out used equipment. The savings can be used for other things such as more equipment or to allow more participation in the sporting activity. On the other hand, most people are aware that no amount of money saved matters if a product does not do what it is intended to do. It is hard to imagine a tennis professional picking up a tennis racquet in a yard sale and using it in the U.S. Open.

One way to approach the question is to look at the level of experience. If you are a beginner, used equipment makes some sense. If you are experimenting with a sport or activity, used equipment might make sense. Even then, the idea of saving money is really just so that you can afford the right equipment when the time comes that you are committed to the sport and have some idea of what it is that best suits you. This approach looks at your equipment as an investment and used equipment is just something to give you an idea of what you are going to ultimately need.

Of course, the type of activity and the nature of the buyer have a lot to do with this decision. For example, if your young son is getting ready to start Little League Baseball, is it best to get him a used glove or a new one? Although he might be just getting started and unsure of what he needs, gloves are also very individual things and need to be broken in carefully by their user. A used glove might have been suited for its previous owner, but not for your boy.

There is also a great deal of variation in quality between various brands in the Sporting Goods industry. There are some low priced items of each type of sporting equipment. Most people know that a used “high quality” brand might still represent a better value than an inferior brand purchased new. It is a hard question to answer because each situation is a little bit different. Your natural instincts will tell you to find a bargain; the clerk in your Sporting Goods Store will encourage a new product. It might be best to seek out the advice of experienced players within the sport. Often they can advise you on the best way to begin. Just remember, if you grow to love the sport, sooner or later, you will be buying your own equipment and you will want it to be both new and the very best you can afford.

Purchase New or Used Sports Equipment?

One of the big decisions faced by many people seeking sports equipment is the choice between new or used. Big brands and big prices exist in the sporting goods industry in the same way they exist in the women’s clothing industry.
Human beings tend to be name droppers. This habit shows up in all types of material related matters. A person who owns a Corvette automobile is just as pleased to tell people the kind of car he owns as he is to drive it on the highway. Some brands just carry status. This is true of price as well. People sometimes brag about the price they paid for an item. Although people respect a bargain, they are also awed to hear that someone has a $1000 dollar fishing pole or spent $100 for their bowling shoes. It is just the nature of the beast and big brands and big prices tend to go together.

A young lady once remarked that her dream was to save up enough money to buy a pair of Head Skis. When asked if she thought they would improve her skiing skills more than her present set of skis, she replied that she was not sure. “But,” she said, “Everyone who is cool has Heads and they cost so much more. They must be better.” This attitude sums up the attitude of many people about big brands and big prices. People associate higher price with a better product and many higher priced brands carry a “name value” that is totally unrelated to quality.

Well, to argue that “name value” and quality are not related is not entirely accurate. It may be true that you are going to be paying a little extra for the name on your equipment, but somewhere along the way, the name value was earned. Sports, on the whole, are result orientated. The big brands that carry the big prices did not get to their place simply by a decision by the manufacturer to charge more than anyone else. In the case of Head skis, it was countless successful skiers that made them popular with all the “cool” people in the first place.

Yet, variety is the spice of life and a boon to the sportsman, too. There is never just one brand that is going to be considered best by everyone. There will always be adherents to one or another even among the top professionals in any sport. Even in cases where one brand seems preferred by the majority, some rebels will be insisting a competing brand is better. They will, often, be producing results to back their claims.

So, don’t be overly swayed by the big name brands or think the more you pay, the better the item you get. This is not a law carved on a stone tablet anywhere. The right piece of equipment is the one that works best for you and can be afforded on your own budget. Many brands have earned their popularity and their high price with proven results. You can take that into consideration, but still search, always, for what works best for you.

The Hollis Brookline U13 Caviliers are the 2007 State Champions!

Yes!
